At the 1998 convention, the stud book & registration committee approved a schedule that speeds up the parentage verification process by instituting a schedule for mandatory DNA typing of mares and parentage verification of their foals. According to that same schedule, AQHA now must have only completed genetic types for stallions and mares -- but not parentage verified completed for foals. Here is that schedule:
Year mare foaled Deadline for genetic type of mare prior to registration of foal
1994 and later January 1, 2000
1993 and later January 1, 2001
1992 and later January 1, 2002
1991 and later January 1, 2003
1990 and later January 1, 2004
1989 and later January 1, 2005
Parentage verification through DNA testing underscores AQHA's commitment to ensureing the integrity of the breed and establishes positive identification. DNA testing also helps build a better understanding of certain genetic disorders and may prevent them from being passed on to future generations.
All weanlings and yearlings entered in the 2007 AQHYA, Bayer Select or AQHA World Championship shows must be parentage verified by the show's entry deadline.
AQHYA World Championship Show - July 1
Bayer Select World Championship Show - August 1
AQHA World Championship Show - September 15

REMINDER: All foals born in 1992 or later must be DNA genotyped and parentage verified prior to being tattooed.
